The BTU problem
Air conditioners are sold on a BTU number that has quietly meant two different things since the DOE changed how portable units are rated. The same machine can be advertised at 14,000 BTU by one retailer and 10,000 SACC by another, and buyers reasonably conclude one is bigger. We record the rating standard alongside the number, because an oversized unit short-cycles, fails to dehumidify, and leaves a room clammy and cold at once.
Where the figures come from
Capacity, coverage area, efficiency ratings and noise levels come from manufacturer specifications for the specific model number, with the rating standard recorded where the manufacturer states it.
Owner insights come from long-run reports rather than first-week reviews, because the failure modes that matter in this category — drainage, window-kit fit, compressor noise at night — only show up after a full season.
